How did Dreamhost became the webhosting revelation company of 2007?

As they proudly state on their website, Dreamhost was founded by four Computer Science undergraduates at hmc.edu in Claremont, CA in April 1997. Their first web server was a Pentium 100 connected to a shared bandwidth on a T1 line that a friend gave them at no cost.
